Skin Texture Tuesday: Unfiltered Selfies & Personal Love Letters

Little Crusty’s #SkinTextureTuesday

When I started Little Crusty as an Instagram page I was mostly just talking about my routines and reviewing products. I noticed a popular hashtag was #TextureTuesday, where content creators showcase stunning textures of face masks, moisturizers, and cleansers in creative ways. I wanted to participate but my photography skills were simply not up to par. Then I realized: my skin had plenty of texture to showcase. Thus, #SkinTextureTuesday was born.

The premise is simple. You just post an unfiltered, unedited photo of your skin paired with a caption affirming your self worth. Below is the caption for the first ever #SkinTextureTuesday post. You can view the original post here.

“Happy (Skin) #TextureTuesday. Today I wanted to share some personal reflections I’ve been having about skin/beauty/acne/”imperfections” in response to a recent post by @anotheracnepage. The first picture is from last night. The others are from the past few years. All pictures have no filters and no edits.”

“The inspiration for little crusty came from a joke by my partner that “even when my skin was at its best, I was still just a little crusty,”. That was liberating to hear. I don’t need glass skin to feel good enough to leave the house without makeup. I’m allowed to breakout and not wan to hide from the world. Most importantly, I realized I had more to offer the world than achieving #skingoals. I felt that my life would improve if I could just clear my acne for good. It felt like a constant roadblock, in spite of the fact that it was 150% self imposed. Your skin is the largest organ, but beauty runs deeper. It extends beyond what your skin looks like and what you are wearing. “

” Beauty enshrines so much more. How do you treat others? Are you kind, supportive, giving? Do you make others smile? Do you make yourself smile? When was the last time you laughed?”

What makes you feel good? Running? Painting? Spending time with family? Reading? All of those things are beautiful because all of those things are you. Your skin is perfect because it’s yours. We are always shifting, changing, and growing. Our skin is no different. Imperfections do not carry any moral value. Breakouts are not indicative of an ethical shortcoming on your part. Your skin is beautiful now, tomorrow, and a week from now – because it is yours.”

Today, there are almost 200 posts in the Skin Texture Tuesday hashtag on Instagram. It has been so amazing reading people’s thoughts on their skin. Their vulnerability, candor, and determination is inspiring and I hope their words will be able to inspire other folks to feel more comfortable in their own skin.

Moving forward, I don’t want this to be just Little Crusty’s #SkinTextureTuesday, but continue to grow as a space for the acne positivity community to share and learn from each other. I’m currently scheming ways to incorporate some folks onto this blog as well sharing their stories! Super excited to take everyone along for the ride.

P.S. I know Little Crusty’s #SkinTextureTuesday sounds like a narcissistic carnival attraction or something but I’m trying to get good SEO okay?!
